The most distant Messier object at 62 million light years from Earth in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, Messier 58 (M58) is a gorgeous, colorful barred spiral galaxy. It houses a supermassive black hole at its core that contains 70 million solar masses.
While there is a high level of star-forming activity near its center (which makes it what scientists call a “starburst galaxy”), its spiral arms have very little going on due to a bereft of free hydrogen gas there.
