Spinning 35 million light years away in the Leo Constellation, M96 is unbalanced—its stars and gas distributed unevenly in its feeble spiral arms and its core off center.

 

That notwithstanding, the galaxy is experiencing a surge in new star formation, primarily in the dark lanes you see in the image. The galaxy is part of the M96 Group—a collection of gravitationally bound galaxies that includes Messier 105 and Messier 95.
