The area around the Fossil Footprint is a much larger emission region than this image shows. It takes a wider field of view to express that and actually see where it gets its name. But the central region has a fascinating chemistry, showing many hues here due to the interactions of ionized hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen gasses.

The distance to NGC 1491 has been estimated at 9,800 light years. But newer data from the Gaia satellite places it at a distance of 10,700 light years based on the distance to its ionizing star, BD+50 886.
