Striking out on its own 60 million light years away in Canes Venatici, NGC 4217 lives a quiet, unassuming life. Viewed directly, edge-on, NGC 4217 gives scientists an opportunity to study the nature and movement of interstellar dust lanes in galaxies.
In this case, the dust lanes can be seen extending as much as 7,000 light years above and below the galactic plane. Evidence suggest that these dust clouds have been forced out of the plane due to supernova explosions.
