Distance estimates range from 30 million to 40 million light years away for this galaxy that we are viewing edge-on in Coma Berenices.

Because its view for us is edge-on, it’s fertile ground for the study of globular clusters. Because they orbit galaxies at various distances, face-on galaxy views cause them to get lost in the light of such a galaxy’s stars.

The Needle is roughly a third larger than our Milky Way Galaxy and is classified as a spiral galaxy. Moreover, infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope shows strong evidence of a central bar.
