NGC 5033 is a stunning galaxy in Canes Venatici roughly 40 million light years distant.
The galaxy is about the same size as the Milky Way at 100,000 light years in breadth. The dominant blue color is indicative of widespread star formation. It contains around twice the amount of oxygen as our galaxy. This indicates that it is a mature galaxy that has produced several generations of stars that create elements heavier than the primordial hydrogen that dominate the mass of earlier generations.
NGC 5033 contains a supermassive black hole at its center. It is classified as a Seyfert galaxy. Seyfert galaxies have active nucleuses, presumably caused by matter accreting to a supermassive black hole, and their cores give off tremendous amounts of energy.
