Sh2-301 is an emission region in Canis Major that is about 17,000 light years away. It’s rich in ionized oxygen gas, which accounts for the blue central region.

This star-forming region is sandwiched between the more popular targets Thor’s Helmet and the Vela Supernova remnant. So it is often overlooked and has not been the subject of much research.
