Powered by the binary star system XY Per, vdB 24 is a variable reflection nebula that lies approximately 1,400 light years away in Perseus.

 

Its brightness and texture varies on a short timescale of days or weeks based on the relative position of the binary system. It’s surrounded by the dark nebula LDN 1442, which comprises a brownish, frigid interstellar dust and dense clouds of cold hydrogen.
