Messier 77 (M77) is an intriguing spiral galaxy roughly 45 million light years away in the Cetus constellation. M77 is the quintessential example of a so-called Seyfert galaxy. A Seyfert galaxy has a very bright center containing what astronomers call an active galactic nucleus. Such a nucleus emits X-rays and ultraviolet light that indicates activity powered by a supermassive black hole.
M77 also contains a central bar surrounded by areas of intense star formation. There is also a great deal of star formation going on in its spiral arms.
