Messier 103 (M103) is an open star cluster in Cassiopeia located roughly 9,000 light years from the sun with approximately 172 stars. It appears to have an age of around 9 million years.

Note that the red star in the center of the cluster is indeed actually part of the cluster. But it is a high-mass star that has evolved into a red giant star.

Open clusters are much smaller and far less densely populated than globular clusters. Their stars are loosely bound, and those stars usually eventually follow their own paths to other parts of the galaxy.
