The Monkey Head Nebula, NGC 2174, in Orion is a favorite of astrophotographers. It’s easy to see why. Aside from the obvious pareidolia of the primate’s profile, it’s a feature-rich area 6,400 light years away containing pillars, striations, and a great deal of variation in color and chemistry.

The Monkey Head is a prolific star nursery. But it’s not destined to last. The stars it creates emit intense stellar winds that will eventually disperse much of the gas in the nebula and cause it to fade from our view.
