The Pac-Man Nebula, NGC 281, is a star-forming region roughly 9,200 light years from Earth in the Cassiopeia constellation.

Scientists think that some external event, perhaps a supernova explosion, triggered a wave of star formation in the area. The nebula also contains several Bok globules. Bok Globules are generally smaller, dense formations of dark gas and dust that are ideal locations for new star formation. They are named for the Dutch-American astronomer, Bart Bok, who first observed them in the 1940s.
