Sh2-27 is an emission region in the Ophiuchus constellation. It lies approximately 440 light years from Earth. It’s ionized, and therefore visible to us, by the star Zeta Ophiuchi (ζ Oph). From our point of view, Sh2-27 is one of the largest nebulas in the sky because of its relatively close proximity to us. Even this two-panel mosaic fails to capture all of it.
One notable thing about the ionizing star ζ Oph (also known as Khan) is that it is a runaway star ploughing through Sh2-27. This has created a large bow shock visible in blue on the left side of the frame.
