Sh2-115 & 116 – Wide Field

July 5, 2023

Use mouse wheel to zoom, drag to pan, and buttons for other options

Sh2-115 is the larger blue region top center and Sh2-116 is the small round planetary nebula slightly below and to its left roughly 9,800 light years away in the Cygnus constellation.

There’s an interesting pair of folds of primarily hydrogen gas just below Sh2-115 that are catalogued as LBN 380. The entire field is a small part of the massive star-forming complex called Cygnus-X. The Cygnus-X complex houses more than 800 distinct HII (ionized hydrogen) regions, which makes it one of the richest star-forming areas in the entire galaxy.
