Approximately 470 light years away in the Scorpius constellation, the Blue Horsehead Nebula (IC 4592) grazes in its celestial pasture atop the galactic plane. The area is a striking juxtaposition of blue reflection nebulas set against the backdrop of chocolate and red dark molecular clouds.
The septuple star system Nu Scorpii is responsible for illuminating the main part of the nebula in deep blue hues. Sydney van den Bergh noticed this and added it to his vdB catalogue of reflection nebulas in the 1960s as vdB 100:

But professor van den Bergh also noticed three other reflection nebulas. The first is a rare brownish reflection nebula he catalogued as vdB 101:

The remaining two in the frame are the more traditional deep blue. He catalogued one as vdB 102:

And he catalogued the other as vdB 103:

Although I shot this image from Kanab, Utah in 2023, it’s a very popular target for astrophotographers in the southern hemisphere. It’s very near to, and often considered part of, the incredibly beautiful Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. This is definitely deserving of much more exposure time, an undertaking I will engage in when I next have the chance.
