A Scorpion and a Bubble – Messier 52 and the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635)

Here’s a wide field juxtaposing the open star cluster Messier 52 (M52), popularly called the Scorpion Cluster, with the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635). M52 is roughly 5,000 light years away in Cassiopeia (although the distance is really not certain).

 

M52 contains about 200 stars with a density of about one star per cubic light year. It contains a large number of variable stars. Variable stars are a key to determining vast distances in space.
