Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore was a very respected English amateur astronomer who hosted BBC's The Sky at Night television program for 55 years.

Moore noted that the Messier Catalogue was confined to targets visible from the mid latitudes of the northern hemisphere, but even then, it did not contain many bright objects amateurs would be able to observe or photograph. So he compiled a list of 109 of the objects missing from the Messier Catalog to include objects in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
To avoid confusion with the Messier Catalogue, abbreviated with "M," he used his the first part of his surname and released the Caldwell Catalogue in 1995 in Sky & Telescope Magazine.
